The Houston-Galveston Area Council is pleased to offer a comprehensive free adult bicycle safety education program for both motorists and bicyclists. The program is intended to meet the following goals:
- Reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities in our region,
- Increase confidence for those who ride bicycles or who are interested in riding, and
- Increase confidence of motorists on how to share the road with bicyclists safely
Bike Safety Classes
In 2019, there were 857 crashes in our region involving bicycles. Let's work together to bring this number down.

Bicycle Friendly Driver (Free Class Geared Toward Vehicle Drivers)
About the Class
For drivers, the Bicycle Friendly Driver one-hour class reviews the rules and best practices of safely sharing the road with bicyclists.
The class is based on curriculum created by The League of American Bicyclists and City of Fort Collins Bicycle Ambassador Program/Bike Fort Collins.
Topics covered include:
- Sharing the road
- Common crashes
- Taking the lane
- Interactive scenarios
This class is free to those within the H-GAC 8-County MPO service area (Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, and Waller counties).
We have no more Bicycle Friendly Driver classes. planned at this time. We anticipate to restart these efforts again later this year.
CyclingSavvy (Free Online Class For Bicyclists)
We no longer offer access to this online education tool, we may offer access to this portal or similar services in the future.
Train Your Bike (Free In-Person Bicycle Handling Class for Bicyclists)
About This Class
For new or experienced bicycle riders, this on-the-bike class teaches adult riders how to anticipate most common scenarios they will face and provides the tools to address real world challenges, from debris to sharing the road, in order to boost confidence and enhance the riding experience.

One-quarter of all fatal crashes in our region involve a pedestrian or bicyclist. To reduce the fatal crash rate and ensure that we all get to our destination safely it is important for everyone to practice safe behaviors and treat other road users with respect, whether walking, biking or driving.
