Integration of Traffic Signals on SH 105

Montgomery County

SH 105

Fostoria Road to FM 1486

This project will provide necessary interconnection to existing traffic signals as well as remote connection to Houston TranStar's network. This improvement project will expand TxDOT - Houston Districts current connectivity to traffic signals. These fiber connections will enhance reliability and redundancy to TranStar's regional network. These connections will provide remote communication to allow data collection, signal timing modifications, and signal monitoring making maintenance more efficient while promoting safety.

The project will involve the installation of fiber optic communications cable on SH 105 from Fostoria Road to FM 1486. This project will provide real-time traffic monitoring and real-time signal adjustments during incidents. It will also allow for the collection of data to determine when adjustments should be made to address recurring and non-recurring congestion.

This project will improve signal timing, responsiveness, notification, and data collection. It will contribute to identifying recurring and non-recurring congestion, creating reliable travel times to improve safety, efficiency, and improving the quality of life for road users experiencing delays.

Planning Factors - Incident/Event Management

Yes

This Traffic Signal Integration project will provide remote management of signals along the corridor in the event of an incident or emergency on the corridor or adjacent corridors. This would facilitate immediate timing changes or other modifications to the signal system.

Yes

Per HGAC Congestion Management Process Update, published January 2015, SH 105 eastbound from the Montgomery County Line to Spur 573 is on the CMP Network Segment List.

Planning Factors - Interagency Coordination/Continuity of Operations

Yes

The proposed signal integration system would tie into Houston TranStar, the region's Transportation Management and Emergency Management center. Other than the four government agencies that comprise the consortium, numerous local government agencies have agreements for sharing resources at Houston TranStar.

Yes

Traffic signal integration will provide remote management of traffic signals during all emergency events, allowing access to modify timing, patterns, and data collection even when the signal may not be physically accessible.
