What is the RTP?
As the federally designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), H-GAC must develop and update a Regional Transportation Plan (RTP). This plan helps guide major transportation projects for the next 20 years or more.
H-GAC is responsible for regional transportation planning in the eight-county Houston-Galveston area. This region includes more than 7.2 million people across Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, and Waller counties.
The most recent version of the RTP, the 2045 RTP Update and the 2045 RTP Update Amendment, included:
- Nearly $109 billion in transportation investments
- More than 750 projects to enhance mobility and infrastructure
- Projects supported by 63 local public agencies
Why It Matters
The RTP outlines the region’s transportation vision, goals, and strategies. It also describes:
- What our transportation system looks like today
- What we want it to look like in the future
- How we’ll reach those goals with specific projects
Public input is a key part of developing the RTP. H-GAC is gathering feedback through multiple rounds of public meetings. Methods to provide feedback include an RTP Visioning Survey, interactive mapping exercises, and more. These efforts help ensure the plan reflects the needs and priorities of the community because it's your plan, my plan, our plan.
