The East Fork San Jacinto River watershed covers parts of Walker, San Jacinto, Liberty, Montgomery, and Harris counties. Water bodies in the East Fork San Jacinto River watershed face water quality challenges related to impairments and concerns caused by elevated levels of the fecal indicator bacteria. These impairments and concerns can impact public health, ecological health, and the area’s economy.
A partnership of local stakeholders developed a watershed protection plan that outlines voluntary, cost-effective solutions reflecting community priorities to address fecal waste sources and other concerns. In the spring of 2024, the draft East Fork San Jacinto River watershed protection plan was submitted to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for review. Then, the document was delivered to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency who accepted the plan in November of 2024.
