HOUSTON, TX – In May, the Houston-Galveston Area Council’s (H-GAC) Commute Solutions program partnered with Love to Ride for their national Bike Month Challenge. As a result, more than 3,500 lbs. in Carbon emissions were diverted from the air as hundreds of Bike Month participants, including dozens of workplaces and community groups, swapped their cars for handlebars and experienced the fun of cycling, its health and wellness benefits as well as a commute alternative.

“We are excited that this challenge brought together all types and skill-levels of riders as well as inspired others, who may have not biked in a while, to start riding again,” said Emanuel Andrews, H-GAC Senior Program Coordinator. “We are excited to carry this momentum into our Biketober challenge this fall.”

During the May Bike Month Challenge, riders of every skill- and experience-level were given the opportunity to log at least one ride during May on the Love to Ride Bike the Gulf website to be entered to win Love to Ride’s national Bike Month Challenge prizes.

Love to Ride is a program that inspires individuals and communities to start riding more and experience its benefits.

Seven organizations in the eight-county Metropolitan Planning Organization region, which includes Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, and Waller counties, earned the top position on the Bike Month Challenge leaderboards by having the highest level of participation among other workplaces of a similar sizes:

  1. NASA Johnson Space Center (2000+ staff)
  2. University of Houston Downtown (500 - 1999 staff)
  3. Houston-Galveston Area Council (200 - 499 staff)
