Hermann Park

Hermann Park

Hermann Park is centrally located in the heart of Houston, adjacent to bustling areas such as the world renowned Texas Medical Center, Rice University, and the Houston Museum District, and only about 1 mile from the Rice Management Company’s developing innovation center and 2.5 miles from downtown Houston. Also running through Hermann Park is Brays Bayou, home to a stretch of the amazing Bayou Greenway Trails championed by the Houston Parks Board to create a network of 150 miles of connected bike trails throughout Houston. Hermann Park is surrounded by twelve bus stops and three major MetroRail stops – one for Rice University, one for the Museum District, and one for the Texas Medical Center – all on the very edge of the Park. Hermann Park’s location and available space gives it tremendous potential to play a major role in connecting all of these places via bike trails and also integrate into the Houston Bike Plan, which was adopted by Houston City Council in 2017. There are currently no dedicated bike trails or lanes through Hermann Park to help safely connect any of these vibrant areas and the area surrounding the Park can be confusing, disconnected, and potentially dangerous for both pedestrians and cyclists.

The proposed project focuses on adding major bike trails and lanes throughout Hermann Park, connecting the bustling employment, residential and tourist areas that border the Park, as well as connecting to the Houston Bike Plan. The proposed project calls for the creation of 1.73 miles of trails to be added within Hermann Park, connecting to trails outside of the Park. Of these trails, .675 miles are proposed to be a combination of bike and pedestrian off-street trails and 1.055 miles of dedicated on-street bike lanes. The north/south trail will provide the bike commuter link between the downtown/midtown trails and the Texas Medical Center. The east/west trails will intersect with these trails to provide additional connection from the Bray Bayou Greenway trail and Rice University. Due to the death of two cyclists at the Sunset/Main Street/Fannin crossings, METRO and the City are working to make that crossing safer for cyclists and pedestrians. They will be addition green crosswalks to the streets and we need a dedicated connection for cyclists on the Park side. Hermann Park’s master plan also includes an underpass as a safe connection to the Bayou Greenway trail under North and South MacGregor in conjunction with a storm water management project. This connection runs along a primary drainage system through the Park and will provide resiliency when Houston has a storm event. Harris County Flood Control has reviewed the preliminary plans for the connection and is fine with the concept as it will provide detention.

The proposed project’s main outcome is to incorporate Hermann Park into Houston’s city-wide bike plan and allow bikers to safely and effectively use the Park as a biking destination, connect to public transportation or other trails, or to reach main employment centers such as Rice University, the Innovation Corridor and the Texas Medical Center.

Hermann Park Bike Network_Timeline_2018 1031.pdf

Because the proposed Hermann Park Bike Network takes place within Hermann Park and the land is already owned and operated by the City of Houston, the project can begin at any time. The plans have already been reviewed by the City of Houston and Harris County, and the Conservancy has held many meetings with area stakeholders, including Rice University and Texas Medical Center, to ensure collaboration takes places with all entities. The Conservancy is also regularly in contact with stakeholders for any changes or updates that may happen and is ready to begin the implementation of the project if funding is approved.
