Landfills and Other Waste Facilities

Landfills

Landfills are a necessary component in the operation of a solid waste management program and provide for the ultimate disposal of a majority of waste generated throughout the region. Current Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) regulations allow for two types of landfills:

Type I Landfills

Waste is compacted and covered daily.

Type IV Landfills

Allows disposal of brush, construction and demolition waste and/or rubbish that are free of putrescible and household wastes; coverage is required weekly.

The "List of Active Landfills" shows all Type I and IV landfills within the H-GAC region by name, alias, permit, and county. Current Municipal Solid Waste Applications

Revised rules that became effective March 27, 2006, require municipal solid waste facilitly owners or operators to post a complete copy of any application that requires public notice on a publicly accesible website. This requirement applies to applications declared administratively complete on or after March 27, 2006, but does not apply to authorizations at Type IAE and Type IVAE landfill facilities. For the related rules, see Title 30 Texas Administrative Code (30 TAC), Section 330.57, Subsection (i). Type IAE and Type IVAE facilities are described in 30 TAC Section 330.5, Subsections (a) and (b).

Landfill Siting Ordinances

Landfill siting ordinances are land use tools counties can use to determine the appropriate location of landfills within county borders.

Four counties in the region have landfill siting ordinances.

Citizens' Collection Stations

Citizens' Collection Stations in the H-GAC Region

Communities without local disposal facilities can dispose of their waste at Citizens' Collection Stations where household solid waste is collected and then transferred to the appropriate processing or disposal facilities. If you need a road map to the facilities, or information on address, hours of operation, tipping fees, and materials accepted, please consult a business directory.

Transfer Stations

Active Transfer Stations in the H-GAC Region

A Transfer Station is a fixed facility used for transferring solid waste from collection vehicles to long-haul vehicles. It is not a storage facility such as one where individual residents can dispose of their waste in bulk storage containers. Please see a list and map of transfer stations within our H-GAC region. Best Management Practices for Transfer Stations

In 2009, H-GAC held a workshop on the best management practices for transfer stations. The material presented was directed at both existing transfer station operators and those interested in developing a new transfer station. Included in the materials was an overview of transfer station operations and basic design considerations.
