2021 GIS Training at H-GAC

Every year, H-GAC partners with the staff at TeachMeGIS (TMGIS) to bring current, high-quality GIS training opportunities to members of the Geographic Data Workgroup (GDW) as well as all H-GAC members and employees. All trainings are taught on-site at either the H-GAC Training Room or the TeachMeGIS Training Center and come at a discounted rate of 20% off the regular price. All training dates and topics are subject to change without prior notice.

*Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the H-GAC Training Room is closed to visitors until further notice and all of the trainings listed below will be held virtually or at the TMGIS Training Center at 3000 Wilcrest, Suite 195, Houston, TX 77042 by TMGIS staff.*

GISP Test Prep Course

Dates: September 8-10
Location: TeachMeGIS Training Center or Online
Price: $320 (with 20% discount)

The GISCI Geospatial Core Technical Knowledge Exam® is a part of the GIS Professional Certification process. This course reviews concepts and provides insights into specific topics that should be mastered to pass the exam. The course is taught by a GISP who can answer questions and explain in depth GIS concepts across the full gamut of the Geospatial industry.

The GISCI Geospatial Core Technical Knowledge Exam® tests a person’s general geospatial knowledge. It does not test a particular software. Passing the test requires a combination of education and experience that gives a person a solid understanding of many aspects of the geospatial field. Thus, taking this test prep course alone does not guarantee the passage of the exam. This course does, however, review the knowledge areas tested on the exam, starting with understanding the Earths geometry and finishing with database and systems design. It will introduce you to areas of the industry which you may not have had exposure, and help you figure out the topics that you need to put more effort into, and it will supplement the work you will be doing to prepare for the exam.

Audience: Professionals with at least four years of full-time GIS experience who are planning to apply for GISP Certification and who wish to review the concepts before taking the GISP exam.

Fundamentals of ArcGIS

Dates: October 25-26
Location: TeachMeGIS Training Center or Online
Price: $768 (with 20% discount)

GIS gives you an easy way to get access to the tremendous amounts of data available. At first glance, ArcGIS lets you see this data on a map. But underneath, the software has powerful tools for analyzing the data. With ArcGIS, you can quickly print a bubble map showing crime rates, evaluate parcel values across a city, plan a location to open a new branch of your business, or explore a site for potential environmental issues.

This course helps you understand the types of data that ArcGIS supports, and how to manipulate the data. For example, you will learn how to connect to an Excel spreadsheet that has GPS location data in it. This class is the first step in learning to incorporate this valuable application into your daily workflows.

Audience: Those who want to create maps and explore data in ArcGIS.

Advanced ArcGIS Pro

Dates: November 1-3
Location: TeachMeGIS Training Center or Online
Price: $1152 (with 20% discount)

For many GIS projects, there is a simplified way to accomplish a task, as well as a more advanced approach to complete the same task. Now that you are comfortable with the basic functionality of ArcGIS Pro, you may be looking for some more advanced methods of accomplishing your goals. Maybe you want to set some restrictions on your datasets to make sure the appropriate attribute values are always used, or to ensure that there are never gaps between parcel boundaries. Maybe you want to automate repetitive tasks, or perhaps you would like to tie events – such as a set of bus stops or different stormwater pipe diameters – along line features with automated ease. These advanced operations are often overlooked but can greatly enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of GIS.

Audience: This course is for those who are already comfortable with the basics of ArcGIS and want to learn more about working with the enhanced functionality of geodatabases in ArcGIS.

Getting Started with Python API and Jupyter Notebooks

Dates: December 8-9
Location: TeachMeGIS Training Center or Online
Price: $768 (with 20% discount)

Python is a scripting language used to automate tasks and create new functionality in ArcGIS Pro. Python scripts can be used to manipulate a map, execute geoprocessing commands, and read/write files. This three-day course takes a leveled approach to writing scripts; beginning with basic Python syntax and simple scripts, ending with scripts that read files, manipulate the information, and create GIS data.

The course teaches the arcpy site package, using the Spyder IDE. This class is supplemented with a second course, Getting Started with the ArcGIS API for Python and Jupyter Notebooks, which covers the ArcGIS API for Python, Jupyter Notebooks, and interacting with web GIS.

Audience: This course is for those who are already comfortable with the basics of ArcGIS Pro and want to learn how to write Python scripts to manipulate data, projects, and maps.

Registration

When registering for any of the courses above, please be sure to select the correct course name, start date, and location (i.e. "H-GAC" for the H-GAC Training Room or "Houston" for the TeachMeGIS Training Center). For the discount, please then indicate that you are either a "GDW Member", “H-GAC Member”, or an "H-GAC Employee" in the coupon code box to receive the 20% discount. H-GAC and TMGIS staff will then verify the GDW membership, H-GAC membership, or H-GAC employment and apply the discount.
