Watershed Characteristics

The streams addressed by this project are located within the Brazos-Colorado Coastal Basin, referred to as Basin 13. The Basin covers a large geographic area, and includes all or a portion of 20 cities, villages, and census-designated places and six counties: Austin, Brazoria, Colorado, Fort Bend, Matagorda, and Wharton.

H-GAC will analyze bacteria impairments on the segments and assessment units in Basin 13:

  • San Bernard River Tidal – 1301_01;
  • San Bernard River Above Tidal – 1302_01, 1302_02, and 1302_03
  • Gum Tree Branch – 1302A_01
  • West Bernard Creek – 1302B_02
  • Caney Creek Tidal – 1304_01
  • Linnville Bayou – 1304A_01
  • Caney Creek Above Tidal – 1305_02

H-GAC will also analyze use concerns for bacteria for the following segments and AUs, identified in the draft 2014 Texas Integrated Report of Surface Water Quality for Clean Water Act Sections 305(b) and 303(d).

  • West Bernard Creek – 1302B_01
  • Caney Creek Tidal – 1304_02
  • Caney Creek above Water Hole Creek – 1305B_01

About the Project

This effort will be a multi-year process to identify, plan, and address bacteria impairments across the basin in coordination with local stakeholders. The entire basin will be reviewed, with each watershed addressed individually based on water quality data and stakeholder feedback. Watersheds with common issues may be grouped together for implementation efforts to encourage collaboration between stakeholders.

The meeting was open to residents, businesses, governments, community organizations, and other stakeholders interested in taking part in the ongoing effort.

The Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) conducted a review of Basin 13 and collected environmental data in Caney Creek to better understand sources of bacteria and the nature of water quality impairments. The information collected, along with water quality monitoring data, was used to revise a Basin Characterization Report, which identified the water quality issues in the basin in 2016. Using the report data and other input, H-GAC and stakeholders will begin to address bacteria impairments across the basin.

H-GAC staff presented watershed management tools and options available to residents, businesses, and governments to reduce the impairments.
