Walker County Public Transportation Plan

Walker County leaders are working with H-GAC and TxDOT to develop a Public Transportation Plan for the county. The first stage in the process includes a Public Transportation Survey of the residents of Walker County. The survey runs through January 2012 and is available below:

Updated Regionally Coordinated Transportation Plan

For several years the Houston-Galveston Area Council’s Transportation Department has served as the lead agency, coordinating with other public transportation stakeholders in the Gulf Coast Region to develop a coordinated public transportation plan. In 2005-2006 the first regionally coordinated public transportation plan was developed which identified many barriers, constraints and opportunities to improve public transportation coordination in the region. Since that time several new and improved transit coordination projects and services have been implemented to address the gaps in regional services and to advance efforts for better coordination. More information about the 2006 plan documents and that development process is available through the H-GAC Transportation Department Publications Archives.

An update to that 2006 transit coordination plan was recently approved by the Regional Transit Coordination Subcommittee (RTCS). The Updated Regionally Coordinated Transportation Plan (RCTP) is a comprehensive multi-agency plan to better coordinate the public transportation services in our region. It is part of a statewide planning process that includes the councils of governments in Texas. The purpose of the coordination plan is to ensure that all of the agencies that are responsible for planning and providing public transportation are working together to make their services more convenient for their customers and more efficient. The RCTP document, project video and power-point presentation are available for download on this page.

The plan addresses potential partnerships with stakeholders such as transportation providers, local governments, public agencies, and others to achieve the following objectives:

  • Improve the delivery of public transportation services
  • Generate efficiencies in operations that can lead to increased levels of service
  • Encourage cooperation and coordination among agencies
  • Improve customer service for the end users of the coordinated system
