Study Information

The Houston-Galveston Area Council’s Regional Transit Framework Study (RTFS) will identify and prioritize future transit needs for the region and will be incorporated into the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) through the year 2040.  The study will utilize a needs-based planning process and engage transit stakeholders, including local governments and the public, throughout the study process. Specifically, the effort includes a detailed level of analysis of current and future transit system plans and needs, and provides recommendations for a regional decision-making framework to guide future transit policy decisions.  Furthermore, it is intended to foster connectivity between activity centers, enhance community mobility through a variety of modes, and create a vision for a model regional transit system.

What's New

The RTFS has completed its first phase of research and initial analysis of needs and deficiencies.  The information gathered during phase one is now being utilized to create transit options and networks for the region to be put into scenarios.  The scenarios will be based on multiple funding constraints as well as means of meeting transit needs in the region.  These scenarios will ultimately help the region understand the trade-offs between various service modes and what may be most appropriate for various places in the region.

The Power of Transit:  Learning From Peer Regions

As part of the Regional Transit Framework Study, six peer regions were studied to determine how the Houston region is similar and different to other regions’ transit networks. On April 29, 2010 H-GAC hosted a panel event featuring the peer regions that were studied.  Executives from six transit agencies around the nation discussed the successes, achievements and challenges their agencies have experienced in planning, developing, and delivering regional transit services.
