METRO to Host Series of Long-Range Planning Workshops |
METRO is hosting a series of public workshops to discuss the future of transit in the region. METRO's goal is to work with communities throughout its service area to learn where service is needed and how to modify or add to existing service to better meet the needs of the community. Topics of discussion include transit options such as streetcars, commuter rail, light rail, improved bus service, bus rapid transit, and HOV lanes. The series of 24 meetings, scheduled across METRO's service area, will begin on Tuesday, May 10, at the Third Ward Multi-Service Center, 3611 Ennis St., Houston, Texas 77004 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Mr. Charles Hales with HDR will be leading a Brown Bag presentation on the Streetcar Renaissance at H-GAC offices. Charles is a Senior Vice President in HDR's Portland office and has a strong background in livable communities, transit innovation, and public-private partnerships. He also has extensive experience in the development of modern streetcar systems as well as pedestrian and transit-oriented development.
More than 30 cities across the US and Canada are planning or building new streetcar systems. What role does streetcar transit play in a regional transit system? What economic impacts result from these projects? How do cities, transit agencies and other project sponsors cooperate to implement these nontraditional projects? And how are they being funded?
H-GAC's May Brown Bag Series Monday, May 16, 2011 12 p.m. - 1 p.m. H-GAC, 3555 Timmons Lane, Houston, TX Conference Room A
