January 2017
Transportation Policy Council - December 16, 2016
Transportation Policy Council (TPC)
unanimously approved the appointments of the 2017 Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee recommends candidates for TPC Officers and to one at-large position. The Commitee also recommends members for the 16 at-large positions on the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC). Nominations will be submitted for TPC approval at its January 2017 meeting.

The Council also approved amendments to the 2016-2017 Unified Planning Work Program (UPWP). This program describes the transportation plans and related air quality planning activities that will be undertaken in the region. Through the development of the UPWP, changes in regional transportation planning priorities are identified.

Also presented to the TPC: highlights of TxDOT's Proposed 10- Year Plan for the Beaumont, Houston and Yoakum Districts. TxDOT intends to complement MPO investments in urban mobility projects with additional funding allocated to each District for regional and state connectivity. The 10- Year Plans contain projects that strive to provide connectivity and mobility within these districts.

University of Houston Road Warriors
Commute Solutions staff attended the University of Houston vs Prairie View A&M Basketball game on December 3, 2016 to educate fans about how they can become a Road Warrior. Fans were encouraged to try a commute alternative at least once a week. MPO Deputy Director, Eulois Cleckey, discussed NuRide during a radio interview and encouraged residents to track their "green trips." "A green trip can be tracked at Nuride.com; by tracking your trips you can receive discounts to local area restaurants, free parking, athletic events discounts and more".

Holiday DWI TASK FORCE
The DWI Task Force operated during Thanksgiving week and continued during the Christmas and New Year holidays. The Task Force is composed of law enforcement agencies throughout the Houston-Galveston Region that work diligently to remove drunk drivers from the roadways.

The Task Force is funded through a Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant provided by TxDOT, and it is the only multi-agency enforcement grant in the State. This grant helps pay officers overtime for their enforcement activities during the holidays.

H-GAC serves as the administrator of the grant allowing the participating agencies to focus more on their enforcement activities. With the help of participating law enforcement agencies, the goal is to ensure that everyone can enjoy a safe holiday.

For more information about the DWI Task Force, please contact Jeff Kaufman at 832-681-2533.
Our Great Region Award
Congratulations to the Our Great Region Awardees!
This award recognized outstanding projects in the region that are advancing the goals and strategies identified in the Our Great Region 2040 plan.

Completed in 2014 by 24 partner organizations, the Our Great Region 2040 plan is a high-level plan providing tools and strategies that could be used to make the 13-county region an even better place to live, work, and prosper by the year 2040. The plan examines six major topic areas (transportation, environment, economic development, resiliency, housing and healthy communities) and presents Big Ideas and strategies in each that the region can work together toward.
Pedestrian Evaluation Tool
Sidewalks, paths, intersections, and other pedestrian amenities are an important part of the transportation network. H-GAC now provides a Pedestrian Evaluation Tool to help local governments and other interested stakeholders evaluate the safety, comfort and convenience of pedestrian facilities in their community, helping to plan future infrastructure investments.

This tool, available online and as a printable PDF, is intended to be used for preliminary planning and project prioritization.

Become a Road Warrior for a Smarter Commute

Meet Marie.

She lives in League City and works in Memorial City-not the shortest commute in the world. When a friend suggested she start vanpooling, she wasn't sure it would be a good fit. "What helped me was actually trying it," Marie says.

Now, seven years later, she can't imagine getting to work any other way. "I enjoy commuting with my group, and I'm happy to save wear and tear on my car. I'm a better person when I start my day without all that stress."

Marie says it's not difficult being without a car during the day. She and other members of the group have access to the van if something comes up, and her vanpool program covers up to three cab rides a year for emergencies.

Be like Marie, and give your commute an upgrade.

Become a Road Warrior for a smarter commute. Carpool, vanpool, bus, bike or rail-try something new one day a week.
