What are Managed Lanes

Managed Lanes are a tool used to ease traffic congestion during peak travel periods. Unlike traditional freeway or tollway lanes, Managed Lanes provide a free-flow of traffic at or above 45 miles per hour 24 hours a day.

How do Managed Lanes work?

Managed Lanes offer reliable travel times for buses and HOV riders while opening up unused lane capacity for solo drivers who are willing to pay a toll for travel time savings.  To maintain a traffic flow, toll rates and vehicle occupancy restrictions may vary in response to traffic demand.

Benefits of Managed Lanes

  • Ride-sharing and transit use with reliable trip times
  • More travel choices for drivers
  • Congestion  free lanes  provide added capacity via tolled lanes
  • Travel time savings
  • Improved roadway safety through better travel demand management
