The North Houston Highway Improvement Project (NHHIP) is a project of the Texas Department of Transportation. This planned reconstruction of Interstate Highway 45 north, between downtown Houston and the North Sam Houston Tollway, locally known as Beltway 8, also includes segments of connecting freeways.
The project, as planned, is estimated to cost $7 billion. The Houston-Galveston Area Council, as the region’s Metropolitan Planning Organization, is responsible for programming regional transportation projects in the Transportation Improvement Program as approved by the Transportation Policy Council.
The Texas Department of Transportation has begun a process for public involvement related to the North Houston Highway Improvement Project. The City of Houston – with participation from the Texas Department of Transportation, Harris County, and other stakeholders – has also facilitated extensive public engagement with communities historically impacted by highway construction in the corridor.
