Heading Toward the Finish Line

The Texas Legislature is completing its biennial regular session in Austin. While the session is over next Monday, May 30, local governments and H-GAC will be spending time to understand changes made by our lawmakers.

Our state leaders have grappled with problems of a state which is growing, aging, and undergoing profound demographic change. Most of the challenge in Austin is about money, or lack of it. The local government challenge is to provide efficient, accountable and responsive public service within the bounds of available resources. In addition, local governments will be on the front lines of implementing a variety of new laws, major and minor, passed in Austin.

H-GAC's Board, through its Legislative Committee, has been regularly monitoring the status of key legislative proposals. The Legislative Committee will provide a wrap-up report on the legislative session in late June. This information will be available on H-GAC's website in late June.

H-GAC Continues Hurricane Ike Recovery Projects
Completed home
Completed home in Sweeny, Brazoria County
In partnership with the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs, nine housing programs are providing repairs and reconstruction services to citizens of the H-GAC region impacted by Hurricane Ike.

H-GAC is managing the program that covers Austin, Brazoria, Matagorda, Walker, and Waller counties. Over 100 households will receive assistance. Seven homes are complete, and 27 more are under construction.

H-GAC anticipates having the remaining homes under way during the summer.
Prepare Early for Hurricane Season
Hurricane IkeAs a reminder, hurricane evacuation maps, including zip zone evacuation, surge zone, and evacuation routes, can be found on the H-GAC website. In addition, you'll find links to many other useful websites on that page.

Do You Have A Disaster Debris Clearance and Removal Contract in Place? Recognizing the need for communities to perform efficient and timely cleanup of debris generated by natural disasters, H-GAC has developed the Disaster Debris Clearance and Removal Services Program. By having pre-event debris hauler contracts in place, cleanup can be quicker and less costly.

Procuring reputable and experienced firms can be challenging. H-GAC's Disaster Debris Clearance and Removal Services Program has simplified the process and ensures access to a pool of "most qualified debris removal contractors." H-GAC has handled all the procurement issues. The program can save time and money associated with the procurement process and can help maximize eligible FEMA reimbursement.

To learn how to participate in the program, contact Cheryl Mergo, Sustainable Development Program Manager, or visit the website.
