Time to Get Involved

Warmer weather has definitely come to the H-GAC region. With it is the need for all of us to do our part in improving our region's air quality.

All segments of our region--industry, small business, and government--are implementing emission reduction programs. Each of us as individuals can do our part to reduce air emissions, and our efforts make a difference.

Our area has recorded two consecutive years in compliance with national air quality standards for ozone. If we can continue our good efforts this year the region may be eligible to become an attainment area. This would bring many advantages to our area.

Improvements so far are a result of strong team efforts. I hope you will do your part. More information is available on our website's air quality pages.

April Is Fair Housing Month

Fai Housing Icon

The Houston-Galveston Area Council reminds everyone that the Federal Fair Housing Act makes discrimination in housing against the law. In any decision regarding rental, sales or lending, it is illegal to consider race, color, national origin, sex, disability or family status. The H-GAC Board of Directors recognizes April as Fair Housing Month.

If you feel your fair housing rights have been violated, all complaints and comments should be addressed to the local office of U.S. Housing and Urban Development at 713-718-3199.

Houstonians Celebrate Fresh Air Friday
O'Neill and Steele
Terence O'Neill and Jack Steele with Fresh Air Friday Proclamation

On Friday, April 8, Houstonians gathered at Jones Plaza at the eighth annual Fresh Air Friday: A Picnic on the Plaza event hosted by H-GAC. Attendees learned about clean air programs that promote the use of alternative fuels, clean-engine technology and commute alternatives. Speakers included H-GAC Executive Director Jack Steele, METRO President and CEO George Greanias, and City of Houston Director of International Affairs, Terence O'Neill.

With Ozone season underway (March 1 - October 31), warmer temperatures contribute to increased levels of ground-level ozone. More than 1,500 attendees were encouraged to declare an action for clean air such as recycling, trying a commute alternative or conserving energy.

At the event, attendees received free health screenings from Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, Fresh Air Friday's exclusive medical partner, and danced to live jazz music from the Stephen Richard Band while enjoying food and beverages from popular Houston restaurants. Prizes were also awarded throughout the event.

18th Annual River, Lakes, Bays 'N Bayous Trash Bash® Success

Trash Bash 2011

The 18th annual River, Lakes, Bays 'N Bayous Trash Bash® held on Saturday, March 26, 2011, was a huge success!  The weather was perfect, attracting  a record number of volunteers. More than 6,700 folks came out to clean-up trash and debris and to learn how they can protect their local waterways all year long.

Trash Bash® participants collected 132,815 pounds of trash (66 tons) along 176 miles of shoreline at 17 different clean up sites.  Volunteers also collected more than 617 tires for proper disposal and recycled approximately 5,737 pounds of material.  Educational displays and activities were provided at each site and continue to be an important part of our event each year.

Community Collaboration Key to Sustainability
Sustainability Peer Exchange GraphicH-GAC, along with a consortium of community, government and non-profit agencies, is working to collaborate with organizations throughout the Houston region to combine resources to reach the greatest number of people. Following the award for a $3.75 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to develop a Regional Plan for Sustainable Development, H-GAC hosted a Sustainability Peer Information Exchange that was well-attended by a cross-section of representatives from across the 13-county region. Groups learned more about sustainability projects in the region and shared their ideas and concerns about developing a plan to help the region grow in a sustainable way.

H-GAC invites everyone in the region to participate in planning for regional sustainability. In the coming months, we will begin extensive public outreach in various communities. We will also be selecting members for a number of advisory groups to help guide the planning process as geographical and technical representatives.

To complete a Sustainability Peer Information Exchange Worksheet or for more information, please visit our website.
2010 Census Redistricting Data Now Available
US Census LogoThe 2010 Census Redistricting data (PL94-71) is now available, and summary tables for the 13-County H-GAC region can be found online.

For GIS users, H-GAC is providing shapefiles with data (66 variables: population by age/race/Hispanic origin and housing units) for blocks, block groups, tracts, places and school districts for the 13-county H-GAC region. Click to download the zip file.

The decennial census no longer collects information on income, education, etc. This is done by American Community Service (ACS). H-GAC provides a map interface which allows users to select a census tract and access a wealth of ACS data.

AerialThe H-GAC 2010 Aerial Imagery is now available to the general public online. If you are interested in acquiring the entire data set or individual Lambert imagery tiles in 1-foot pixel resolution, please click here.

H-GAC's Geographic Data Committee (GDC) is gearing up for the next round of digital aerial imagery acquisition in 2012. In 2011 H-GAC will be going out for bid, selecting vendors and garnering financial support from agencies who desire to take part in the update.

GDCPlease consider attending our GDC meetings held the first Wednesday of each month at 9:30 a.m. at H-GAC Conference Room A, second floor. Many of the upcoming meetings will include discussions on the imagery topic. This will also provide a forum for your agency to express its desire to cost-share on your portion of the H-GAC coverage area. The more cost-share participation we receive, the lower the cost for each participant.
