Twenty-million Americans participated in that first Earth Day to raise environmental awareness and promote ways to create a healthy, cleaner planet, such as: conserving wildlife and natural resources, encouraging pollution prevention activities, supporting civic participation, and developing a sense of environmental responsibility among the youth. That first Earth Day led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the passage of the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act.Now in its 37th year, Earth Day attracts millions of people to events held annually to increase public awareness about protecting the environment. Citizen groups, local governments, businesses, neighborhoods, schools, and individuals throughout the world celebrate the event by cleaning up parks and schools, teaching others, and learning about ways to reduce pollution. EPA's Earth Day web site offers you many tips and fun ways to protect the environment and your health every day. To learn what you can do in the home, around your neighborhood, in your school, or place of business, visit www.epa.gov/earthday. For even more ideas, visit www.earthday.gov. March 2006 nationwide online survey that asked people why they were replacing their electronic product and what they did with their old equipment. Back to Top 2007 River, Lakes, Bays 'N Bayous Trash Bash Start 2007 off the right way—mark March 31st on your calendar and join forces with thousands of dedicated volunteers cleaning Houston area waterways for the fourteenth annual River, Lakes, Bays 'N Bayous Trash Bash. When someone litters in our community, some of that trash ends up in our storm drain system, eventually emptying into Galveston Bay. The trash that makes its way to area waterways is one component of non-point source pollution. We all contribute to non-point source pollution…the question is, what are you going to do about it? Make a commitment to "Clean It Like You Mean It" with your neighbors at any of the 16 Trash Bash clean up locations in the Houston–Galveston area. Mobilize your family, school, church, neighbors, and organizations to remove tons of trash and debris from the Galveston Bay watershed. Registration and check-in starts at 8:30 a.m. To expedite Trash Bash 2007 registration, visit www.trashbash.org to download a registration/liability form which you can fill out and bring with you to the event. All volunteers receive a commemorative t shirt and are invited to enjoy a free lunch, door prizes and environmental activities. Boy Scouts are encouraged to participate and earn credit towards merit badges. Visit www.trashbash.org to obtain more information including detailed driving directions and instructions for all 16 Trash Bash sites.
