January Board of Directors Meeting
At their January meeting, the H-GAC Board of Directors approved additional funding for the Harris County Motorist Assistance Program. 

In addition, the December Financial Report was approved unanimously. The Board also approved resolutions recognizing January as Parks and Natural Areas Month and honoring retiring Board member Harris County Commissioner Jack Morman for his service to the region.

City of La Porte Council Member and H-GAC Chair, Chuck Engelken, introduced the new representatives and alternates present at the meeting who will serve for the coming year on the H-GAC Board of Directors.  Click HERE for the new roster. 
Save The Date - 2017 Annual Meeting - March 3, 2017
The 2017 General Assembly Annual Meeting is scheduled for Friday evening, March 3 at the West Loop Marriott in the Galleria area.  Invitations will be mailed shortly.

The evening begins with a reception at 6:00 p.m. followed by Dinner at 7:00 p.m.  

Officer election ballots will be mailed to all General Assembly delegates in mid February for election of the 2017 Board of Directors Officers.  Ballots will be opened and the results announced at the Annual Meeting.  Those nominated to serve as officers include:
  • Chair:  Commissioner Gary Nelson, Chambers County
  • Chair Elect:  Council Member Floyd Emery, City of Missouri City
  • Vice Chair:  Commissioner Stacy Adams, Brazoria County 
The guest speaker at the meeting will be Steven C. McCraw, Director of the Texas Department of Public Safety.  Steve McCraw became the director of the Texas Department of Public Safety in August 2009 and also serves as the Governor's Homeland Security Advisor. In 2004, McCraw retired from the FBI to become the Texas Homeland Security Director in the Office of the Governor where he served for five years.

2017 Election Law Workshop
The 2017 Election Law Workshop will be held on Thursday, February 2, 2017 in Houston, TX at the Marriott West Loop in the Galleria area. The workshop is designed for everyone charged with conducting elections. Participants will receive detailed updates on election laws and step-by-step procedures for conducting an election; including duties prior to election day, on election day, and after election day.

The registration fee is $125 per person and includes breakfast, lunch, Step-By-Step Conduct of an Election Manual and other meeting materials. Click HERE for more information.

Area Agency on Aging - Ombudsmen Training Classes
The Area Agency on Aging is looking to get more volunteers certified as long-term care ombudsmen. Long-term care (LTC) ombudsmen are advocates for resident rights. They help protect the quality of life and quality of care of anyone who lives in a nursing home or an assisted living facility. 

If you have a passion for helping others, a caring spirit and a willingness to learn, we need you! Become an ombudsman and help improve the quality of life and care for residents in a facility near you. We provide training, tools and ongoing support. Classes will be held on Wednesday, February 15 and Friday, March 24.

Commute Solutions at Rice University Basketball Game
Visit the Commute Solutions booth on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at the Rice University Basketball Game vs UTEP with tip off beginning at 7:00 p.m. The game will be held at Tudor Fieldhouse, 6100 Main Street, Houston, TX 77251.

Commute Solutions works with communities, businesses and individuals to reduce congestion and vehicle emissions in our region by providing information on programs such as vanpools, ride-sharing and teleworking. Contact Francis Rodriguez at (713) 993-2437 for more information.

Since 2006, the Park and Natural Areas Subcommittee of H-GAC's Natural Resources Advisory Committee has presented the PNA Awards to highlight best practices and innovative approaches to parks planning and implementation in the Houston-Galveston Region.

H-GAC Staff Achievement
Jeff Taebel, Director of Community and Environmental Planning at H-GAC, was recently honored with the PAB Outstanding Site Visitor Award:Educator by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning, Inc.

Each year ACSP honors faculty and students who have made major contributions to the academy or to the profession via outreach efforts, public service or for service to ACSP, the Academy, or the profession.
