December Board of Directors Meeting
At their December meeting, the H-GAC Board of Directors approved a grant agreement with the Texas Veteran's Commission and an agreement with the Texas A&M Transportation Institute and the Port of Houston to study the impact of congestion and emissions from freight vehicles.

The Board also held a public hearing on the 2017 Budget and Service Plan which was approved unanimously. The Board approved the Election Committee's recommendations for 2017 Officers and authorized mailing of ballots. The nominees for 2017 Board officers are: Brazoria County Commissioner Stacy Adams, Vice Chair; Missouri City Councilmember Floyd Emery, Chair Elect and Chambers County Commissioner Gary Nelson, Chair.

H-GAC Holiday Closures
The H-GAC offices will be closed for the holidays on Friday, December 23 and Monday, December 26.  Office hours will resume Tuesday, December 27, 2016.

The office will also be closed on Monday, January 2, 2017.  Office hours will resume on Tuesday, January 3, 2017.
Regional DWI Task Force - Christmas and New Year's Holidays
The Houston-Galveston Area Council is beginning the fourth year of its Regional DWI Task Force, which consists of 12 law enforcement agencies throughout the Houston-Galveston area. The DWI Task Force will be operating throughout the Christmas and New Year's holidays to reduce the number of instances of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI). 

The Task Force is funded through a Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant awarded by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), providing overtime funds for agencies to enhanced DWI enforcement during holiday weekends when there has traditionally been more alcohol-related traffic incidents. Since its inception, the Task Force has made 986 DWI arrests.

During the Thanksgiving holidays, 9 agencies participated in the enforcement period and 33 DWI arrests were made.
H-GAC - Our Great Region Awards
H-GAC presented the first Our Great Region Awards in early December to recognize outstanding local projects. Seven awards were presented across five categories. More than 30 local governments and organizations submitted applications covering transportation, the environment, economic development, resiliency, housing, and healthy communities.

The awards are as follows:

The Connection Award, honoring projects that advance two or more of the Our Great Region 2040 plan's strategies through innovative partnerships.
* Clear Lake City Water Authority for Exploration Green
* West Houston Association for the Greater West Houston Mobility Plan

The Diligence Award, honoring an implemented project that executed a creative and tenacious approach to overcome challenges to implementation.
* Houston Advanced Research Center for the Double Bayou Watershed Protection Plan
* Harris County Engineering Department for the Net-Zero Energy Restroom Prototype (Honorable Mention)

The Opportunity Award, honoring a project that helps to overcome disparities in access to opportunity.
* The Salvation Army for the Young Adult Resource Center

The Reach Award, honoring a project demonstrating exemplary public participation.
* Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge for the From Crosswalks to Boardwalks Initiative

The Excellence Award, the highest honor, recognizing projects best advancing the vision of the Our Great Region 2040 plan.
* Port of Houston Authority for the Small Business Development Program and Maritime Education Program
Parks and Natural Areas Award Recipients to be Honored
Turtle Bayou Nature Preserve The 2016 Parks and Natural Areas (PNA) Awards reception will be held Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at 10:45 a.m. in H-GAC Conference Room A, Second Floor, following the H-GAC Board meeting. Award recipients will receive notification later this month.

Since 2006, the Park and Natural Areas Subcommittee of H-GAC's Natural Resources Advisory Committee presents the PNA Awards to highlight best practices and innovative approaches to parks planning and implementation in the Houston-Galveston Region.

2017 Election Law Workshop
The 2017 Election Law Workshop will be held on Thursday, February 2, 2017 in Houston, TX at the Marriott West Loop in the Galleria area. The workshop is designed for everyone charged with conducting elections. Participants will receive detailed updates on election laws and step-by-step procedures for conducting an election; including duties prior to election day, on election day, and after election day.

The registration fee is $125 per person and includes breakfast, lunch and all meeting materials. Click HERE to register.
