Designing for Impact - Low Impact Development (LID)

Low Impact Development (LID) is a method of developing land that preserves nature and lowers infrastructure and maintenance costs. LID works with nature to capture and disperse stormwater as close to its source as possible. Rather than sending stormwater to a system of storm drain pipes, LID works to distribute stormwater across a project site in order to restore groundwater supply. LID techniques are proven to decrease development and infrastructure expenditures, reduce operations and maintenance costs, and enhance the marketability of projects.

As part of the project, H-GAC is launching a new web page featuring an interactive mapping tool highlighting LID practices in progress and in action across the 13-county H-GAC region. Users can simply click on a site on the map to learn more about the features and benefits of the practices and see photos from the specific project. People using the map can also submit information about LID projects for inclusion in the mapping tool.
