City of Liberty adds new Fire Tanker

The City of Liberty Fire Department unveiled a new Fire Tanker this month. Tanker 28 holds 2500 gallons of water and will make the fire department's life-saving work much easier.

The new fire tanker truck is a much-needed addition for the City of Liberty that did not have a fire tanker truck to service local and area fire fighting needs.

The new fire tanker truck is being purchased by the Liberty Community Development Corporation (LCDC), a 4-B corporation and financed through a long-term loan through the Gulf Coast Economic Development District (GCEDD) Revolving Loan Fund Plan, as approved by the Federal Economic Development Agency (EDA) and supervised by the Houston-Galveston Area Council.

EPA Administrator Visits Port of Houston Authority
Gina McCarthy, EPA

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Gina McCarthy visited the Port of Houston Authority Thursday to formally announce the Port Authority will receive a Diesel Emission Reduction Act (DERA) grant of nearly $900,000.

The grant will help replace 25 older drayage trucks with trucks powered by certified engines that are model year 2011 or newer. These drayage trucks operate in the Port of Houston and along the Houston Ship Channel. The new trucks will also have GPS units to collect data on idling and port operations, which will allow fleet owners and operators to gauge opportunities for additional fuel savings and emissions reduction. These reductions are important to overall air quality in the Houston-Galveston area, which currently does not meet Clean Air Act standards for ozone.

Jack Steele, H-GAC
"We celebrate that the Port of Houston is growing and thriving, while still reducing pollution," Administrator McCarthy said. "The DERA program is a good investment for both business and the environment."

"Replacing old, high polluting diesel engines with new, cleaner technology is always a good investment," stated Jack Steele, Houston-Galveston Area Council Executive Director. "The grant funding awarded today is essential to ongoing efforts to reduce pollution and improve quality of life in the Houston-Galveston-Brazoria region."

H-GAC Commute Survey

H-GAC engaged the research services of Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) to conduct a public survey to analyze the effects alternative commute programs have on reducing congestion, as well as provide insight into any barriers to success for these and future travel demand management strategies.

Efforts to reduce the number of single occupancy vehicles on roadways is critical due to current congestion, population growth, and planned major roadway construction. TTI researchers collected more than 10,000 survey responses to ascertain current practices and preferences of both commuters and employers. Findings from the study enable H-GAC and partners to review and improve incentives aimed at managing roadway congestion by boosting participation in alternative travel modes, telecommuting, alternative work schedules, and other practices.

TTI has completed the first phase of the SPR study and has compiled survey results and analysis at: www.ghcommutes.org.

H-GAC Announces Marine/Construction Equipment Grant Funding

H-GAC has announced grant funding available for regional marine vessel owners and regional construction equipment owners for the purchase and deployment of clean diesel or alternative fuel tug, tow/push boats, or heavy-duty construction equipment. The equipment must operate within the HGB non-attainment area and requires the destruction of the replaced equipment. Applicants are expected to provide two years of data collection and reporting. Responses to the Call for Projects must include CARB- or EPA-certified equipment.

The 22nd annual River, Lakes, Bays 'N Bayous Trash Bash®, held on Saturday, March 28, was a great success.

More than 4,000 volunteers came out to clean up trash and debris and learn how to protect their local waterways all year long. Trash Bash® participants collected more than 26 tons of trash along 161 miles of shoreline at 15 different cleanup sites. Volunteers also collected 439 tires and recycled approximately 1.3 tons of material.
