Storm Debris Management
The Houston-Galveston Area Council recognizes the need for communities to perform efficient and timely cleanup of debris generated by natural disasters and/or major storm events. Storms create problems as they are usually costly to clean up and require a large amount of space in area landfills for debris.
A hurricane poses the greatest threat to the H-GAC Region. A Category 4 Hurricane (winds up to 155mph) which would create an estimated 12 million tons of debris and cause the following problems:
>> Storm surge between 13-18 feet
>> Inland flooding as far as 6 miles from the beach
>> Shrubs and trees would be blown down
>> All signs would be destroyed
>> Extensive damage would occur to roofing materials, windows and doors
>> Complete failure of roofs on many small residences
>> Almost total destruction to mobile homes
Disaster Debris Clearance and Removal Services
H-GAC's newly implemented program, Disaster Debris Clearance and Removal Services can assist local governments when executing pre-event debris removal contracts with nationally recognized debris hauling firms.
