Landfills are a necessary component in the operation of a solid waste management program and provide for the ultimate disposal of a majority of waste generated throughout the region.
Types of Landfills in the H-GAC Region
Current Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) regulations allow for two types of landfills:
Type I Landfills: waste is compacted and covered daily
Type IV Landfills: allows disposal of brush, construction and demolition waste and/or rubbish that are free of putrescible and household wastes; coverage is required weekly.
These maps show active Type 1 and 4 Landfills, Transfer Stations , and Citizens' Collection Stations within the H-GAC region. *** Please note: These maps are to demonstrate the distribution of solid waste facilities throughout the H-GAC region. They are not to serve as a road map to facilities. For more information on addresses, hours of operation, tipping fees, and materials accepted, please consult a business directory.***
View Permitted Solid Waste Facilities or Citizens' Collection & Transfer Station List. As a compliment to the Facility Map, this spreadsheet lists all the solid waste facilities within the Houston-Galveston region by name and permit (and their aliases).
Citizens' Collection and Transfer Stations
Communities without local disposal facilities have two options for their solid waste disposal. Citizens' collection stations are where household solid waste is collected and then transferred to the appropriate processing or disposal facilities. A transfer station is a fixed facility used for transferring solid waste from collection vehicles to long-haul vehicles. It is not a storage facility such as one where individual residents can dispose of their waste in bulk storage containers
