H-GAC Regional GIS Mapping Tools

The H-GAC Socio-Economic Modeling Program has developed an online GIS for providing land use and forecast data. Both of these GIS applications can be accessed either via an Internet browser or via ArcGIS Desktop (9.2 or higher). The following is a brief overview of how to access the GIS applications using both methods.

Method 1 - Internet Browser Access

Accessing our GIS applications through the Internet does not require the installation of any software on your computer other than an Internet browser. The links provided on our website will launch the GIS application using your default browser application installed on your computer. We recommend using Microsoft Internet Explorer, and cannot guarantee that this application will work well with other browser applications. If you experience issues with loading the GIS application and you are using Internet Explorer, try either turning off add-ons or running Internet Explorer in the "No Add On" mode (usually provided as a shortcut in your start menu). A link to a help document is provided on the top menu bar in the application to assist with using the basic functions of the GIS application.

Method 2 - ArcGIS Desktop Access (9.2 or higher)

If you are using ESRI ArcGIS Desktop version 9.2 or higher, you can stream the layers from our browser-based GIS applications by connecting directly to our GIS servers. Once connected, you can add layers and geoprocessing tools (e.g. Land Use Calculators, Population-Employment Calculators) to your desktop layers and toolboxes as if they were residing locally. Geoprocessing query results are provided in ESRI feature class format, so once you obtain the results of a query, you can export that data as either a shapefile or feature class. The following are instructions for connecting to and accessing our layers and geoprocessing tasks.

Step 3: Add the Land Use and Socioeconomic Toolboxes to ArcToolbox
Open "ArcToolbox" and right-click on the ArcToolbox root folder
Select "Add Toolbox"
Navigate to the "GIS Servers" folder, select "arcgis on arcgis.h-gac.com"
Select "SE" and doubleclick
You will see two toolboxes: "HGAC_Land_Use_GeoProcessing"
and "HGAC_Socio_Economic_GeoProcessing".
If you doubleclick them they will be added to the ArcToolbox tree.
Doubleclick each of the toolboxes to expand them and show the three tools included:
Area, Linear, Radial.
The Area tool allows you to define a polygon.
The Linear tool allows you to draw a line and define a buffer.
The Radial tool allows you to place a point and define a buffer.
Note: When using a tool, and if more than one feature is submitted (e.g. two polygons),
the results will be aggregated as a single multi-part feature.
