Regional Freight Movement
The GCEDD has prioritized regional freight movement as a regional economic development strategy. At the April meeting of the GCEDD, Hans-Michael Ruthe, Chief Planner in the Houston-Galveston Area Council's (H-GAC) Transportation Department, presented on regional efforts to enhance freight mobility. These include the implementation of the 2012 Regional Goods Movement Plan, the Fixing America's Surface Transportation Act (FAST Act), and the Texas Freight Mobility Plan. He also elaborated on the development of the Greater Houston Freight Committee. The Committee will provide input on freight studies, freight priorities for regional investment, and performance measurement, and identify FAST Act critical urban freight corridors. Mapping for Economic Development

The right map can provide a new perspective on an economic development problem. At the April meeting of the GCEDD, Jeff Taebel, Director of Community and Environmental Planning at H-GAC, demonstrated the mapping tool OnTheMap. OnTheMap provides an easy-to- use online interface for creating, viewing, printing, and downloading workforce related maps, demographic profiles, and reports. Additionally, OnTheMap is capable of answering scenario questions in workforce, transportation, and economic developments:

  • Where do young workers live who are employed in a specific geographic area?
  • Where are the workplace destinations for workers living in a particular community or neighborhood?
  • How many potential customers/employees live or work near a candidate site location?

Tutorials are available online to help you get started answering your own economic development questions.
