FM 518 Widening
SH 288 to FM 865
The existing FM 518 from SH 288 to SH 35 consists of four 12-foot-wide travel lanes (two in each direction). The existing project area includes sidewalks in non-contiguous portions of both sides of the existing roadway. The facility had 419 crashes, 5 serious injuries and 0 fatalities during the period from 2015 to 2017. Improving congestion on this facility could save users in excess of 794,000 hours of travel time per lane-mile. Congestion is adversely affecting the travel time and reliability for freight movement. The truck volume on the facility is roughly 3,524 trucks per day and this represents 5.1% percent of the facility's AADT.
Widen from 4 and 6 lane to 6 lane divided
The proposed improvements to FM 518 include the reconstruction and widening of the existing roadway from four lanes to six lanes. The improvements include the addition of one 15-foot-wide shared-use lane in each direction, 12-foot-wide left turn lanes in various locations, and construction of a typical 18-foot-wide raised median (the proposed medianwidth varies). The lane configurations (e.g. number of lanes) vary along the project limits to accommodate turning movements at various intersections and driveways. The proposed improvements also include 5-foot-wide sidewalks on both sides of the roadway. The roadway would be converted to a curb and gutter system. The purpose of this project is to reduce crashes, serious injuries and fatalities; reduce congestion on the facility and improve the reliability of peak-period travel times; improve pavement condition on the facility and increase its pavement rating; reduce congestion and improve travel time reliability for freight movement on this facility.

FM 518 provides a direct connection to SH 288, a designated evacuation route. This project provides improved drainage through the installation of a curb and gutter system.
This project adds one lane of capacity in each direction. This project will construct 5-foot-wide sidewalks, as well as a 15-foot-wide shared-use lane (in each direction) that can accommodate bicyclists.
