Magnolia Relief Route (Phased)
Existing FM 1488 (W of Magnolia) to SH 249
The project need is due to inefficient traffic operations on the existing FM 1488 due to congestion in all directions at FM 1488/UPRR/FM 1774 intersection. Reduced mobility due to competing uses including local traffic vs. through traffic and an increased number of crashes in the existing FM 1488 corridor. The facility had 101 crashes, 5 serious injuries and 0 fatalities during the period from 2015 to 2017. The truck volume on the facility is roughly 1,165 trucks per day and this represents 8.8% percent of the facility's AADT.
The FM 1488 Relief Route is a 4.5 mile new location, divided east-west facility that would serve as a major arterial for distribution of traffic around the City of Magnolia. The project will be constructed in phases (phase 1 is a two-lane, new location roadway. the ultimate build out is four lanes.). The facilities will consist of 12-foot lanes in each direction with 4-foot inside shoulders and 10-foot outside shoulders divided by a 40 foot depressed grass median. Construction would include an overpass at FM 1774, UPRR, and SH 249.
The primary outcomes are decreased traffic congestion, increased mobility, and improved operational efficiency and safety along FM 1488 within the City of Magnolia.
